The University of Leeds

The University of Leeds, one of the largest universities in the UK, is also the most popular among students applying for undergraduate courses. An emphasis on innovative research and investment in high-quality facilities and first-rate infrastructure means that no fewer than 35 departments are rated internationally or nationally 'excellent'. Its size and international reputation enables the University to offer one of the widest ranges of academic courses in the UK. During the current academic year over 31,500 students are attached to 700 different first-degree programmes and 330 postgraduate degree programmes. A further 52,000 men and women are enrolled on short courses with the University.

Leeds is now among the top ten universities for research in the UK and is internationally acknowledged as a centre of excellence in a wide range of academic and professional disciplines. Its broad research and skills base and superb facilities attract interest from major multinationals and small local businesses alike. Many of its research initiatives cross traditional subject boundaries and Leeds currently promotes projects through 58 inter-disciplinary centres and seven research schools.

As a result, the University attracts more industrial funding than any other in the UK. It also invests its own resources in helping organisations turn university research into world-class products and services.

The School of Earth & Environment

The School of Earth and Environment was created in August 2004 by the merger of the Schools of Earth Sciences and Environment. It is at the same time one of the most interdisciplinary as well as one of the fastest growing schools at the University of Leeds. The research of both schools has been recognised by a Grade 5 during the last research assessment exercise. The School of the Environment was one out of only four schools to have received a maximum Grade 5. The interdisciplinary approach of the School of Earth & Environment covers both natural and social sciences. In the natural sciences the interests in research and teaching range from earth sciences to atmospheric sciences and environmental geochemistry. The link between sustainability and the social sciences is covered by the Sustainability Research Institute (SRI). SRI’s research groups range from Business and Environment and Environment and Risk to Ecological Economics and Sustainable Development. The business group is with a dedicated faculty of four among the largest research groups within SRI and one of the largest Environment and Business Research groups in Europe. In total SRI alone has 18 members of staff that are active in teaching and/or research. In the recent past the social sciences have grown more rapidly than the natural sciences within the School. It is expected that SRI will continue a rapid expansion during the next few years.

The School of Earth & Environment in general and SRI in particular have attracted significant research funding from the national research councils as well as from supra-national sources. This has allowed a research driven approach in the management of the organization.
